Well the season is upon us and last Saturday night we managed to get away with a couple of good wins against the newly reinstated, Manunda Hawks at Cazalys. The Magoos got the ball rolling with a resounding win over an underdone, young Hawks side 17-16-118 to 4-4-28. Best players for the Crocs were the veteran, Brad Lawler, Matty Hunt, Jack Coleman in his first game for the club and Ruckman, James Wollermann. The performance from James was very encouraging given the list of injured talls we have at present. I’m sure his name will bob up at the selection table over the next couple of weeks. I think Coaches Bucky and Darren will have some headaches picking a side each week with the depth we currently have. One of the highlights for me was a scrambling goal by the evergreen Keithy Taylor. Apparently he kicked his last goal was in 1968.

As is usual this time of the year, the senior side had its fair share of new boys. After a fairly slow start, due mainly to many of the lads not having played together, we really got started in the second quarter. With an eight goal to one second term, the game was pretty much ripped away from the struggling Hawks. Several players to impress yours truly were the tough as nails Pete Bury, Todd Shapter and of course our newly appointed Club Captain, Kye Chapple who kicked five majors to start the season.

This week we play host to last year’s runner-up, South Cairns in what should be a tough and possibly spiteful encounter in front of a very parochial, Crocs home crowd. This will be a great chance to come along and have a good look at some exciting young talent. Some of the new lads to watch will be Jesse Mawson from the Geelong area and Jon Hobbs who last year played just down the road from Jesse at Torquay. Others to watch include the tough on-baller, “Pistol” Pete Bury and the fast maturing, Ash Davidson and Ethan McCullough. It was also pleasing to see the return of the exciting Sam Scally, who last played in our 2014 Premiership Team.
This week the reserves kick off at the usual time of 1.00pm with the senior boys taking to the field at 3.00pm. If you haven’t already joined as a member, John Cameron will be on hand to sign you up. All our club shirts, stubby coolers, caps and 200 Club shirts will be on hand. We also have a selection of ladies shirts as well. Speaking of the ladies; all the wives and girlfriends of the players are invited to attend our first 200 Club luncheon at half time of the senior game. Make sure you get along and make some new friends and meet the club sponsors and new members.
Following the game on Saturday we’ll be having a barbeque at the club with all invited. Our bar prices are the cheapest in Port Douglas and the beer is freezin’. This will give everyone the chance to welcome the new players and their partners to the club and listen to some good music. Maybe we’ll see Charlie Broogle Brown with his trusty guitar knocking out some tunes.
Hoping to see you all there!!
