Well, what a fantastic first weekend of footy we’ve just witnessed. Before the first bounce we had the unfurling of our 2014 premiership flags. What a spectacle that was with club legends and life-members, Merilyn Baxter & Andy Smith arriving aboard a helicopter kindly provided by one of our new sponsors, GBR Helicopters. As is typical of this time of the year, we went into our first reserves game a bit under done. Despite a really gallant effort from our McGoos we went down to a pretty slick, young cutters outfit.
About half way through the reserves game John Cameron remarked what a great crowd we have already. Well, we had one of our biggest gate takings ever despite the fact that we had a lot of members through the gate as well. It seems that Aussie Rules Footy is alive and well in Port Douglas.
Following our historic flag unfurling, Brad Cooper’s boys took to the ground and gave us all a first-up treat with a terrific win against a quality opposition. I can tell both of you that weren’t at the Croc Pit on Saturday that this group of players look to be the real deal again. Things looked a little rusty and that’s typical of how things work in Port. A couple of those Tassie boys have got heads as hard as trigonometry. We’ve got a really solid midfield with Tommy Clough leading the way again. Overall, there’s some really exciting things going on with this team so get down and take a look this Saturday when we take on the Bulldogs again at the Croc Pit.
For those that were there for the after-match entertainment, I’m sure you’ll agree that Joe Warren’s pig was a great hit. Together with Shannon’s musical mastery the scene has been set for a big season both on and off the field. As you all know, the success of our club is dependent on you, the our supporter. If you’re supporting the club then the club benefits financially. If we are healthy financially, we put good teams on the paddock and inevitably have team success. It’s the old Catch 22, without you, the club won’t survive. With you the club thrives. So get on board and get to the club this week and get your 2015 club membership.
