Do you all realise that there’s only 133 shopping days left until Christmas? More importantly, there’s only two games left in the home and away season before we embark on another finals campaign. As you would all know by now we have cemented a spot at the top of the AFL Cairns ladder and as I heard last night, we are the minor premiers. This description is, as it sounds; and that is minor. What we have achieved as a club so far is only significant if we have a successful finals series. So unless we prevail on the 19th of September the minor premiership looks even more minor. As far as the reserve grade is concerned, if we stop the clock now we have the double chance. But seeing the last two games are against the team above us and the team below us there is a distinct possibility that we could slip a place and feature in the minor semi-final.
As I looked over the troops last Saturday I couldn’t help but think we have a couple of pretty good looking teams. It was only when I realised that we had some serious talent sitting on the sidelines did I contemplate the depth of our talent pool. Leaning up against the fence were some cattle that would be first picked in either of the two teams that we play next. I’m sure our coaching staff are going to have some sleepless nights leading into the finals as the performances of young guns like Jack Dickson, Ethan McCulloch and Ashley Davidson will surely put some heat on some of the established players. The form of Kane Freyling has also been very encouraging as we all know the sort of finals series he had last season. Ethan’s effort against the Bulldogs on Saturday was outstanding and will put a lot of pressure on both Jimmy and Tim to perform at their best in the next couple of weeks. Ethan has very little respect for his elders!!! (except his mum that is).
It’s been a while since we’ve had a player at the club who’s kicked a century of goals but I am confident that this week we’ll see Kye Chapple notch up his 100th and emulate the feats of Matt Shaw, one of the legends of the club. I’ve gotta say that without doubt, it’s been a pleasure having him at the club. In anticipation of his impending milestone I’d like to congratulate Kye on a magnificent season so far. If you get the chance on Saturday make sure you show your appreciation and give him a pat on the back.
Following Saturday’s game we’ll be having one of our biggest nights of the year at the very popular “Lure” restaurant down at the marina which will get under way at 7.00pm. The last couple of functions we’ve had have been a stack of fun and this one looks on track to emulate those nights. For a mere $45 we’ll have tapas all night with drinks at really reasonable prices at one of the best locations in Port. Apparently Jess has organised some great music and there’ll also be some fantastic door prizes and raffles. Please, do yourself and the club a favour and get along to what promises to be, a great night. The theme for the night will be Blue & White.
Just finally, I’d like mention, once again, the amazing efforts of all our volunteers and committee. It’s incredible how many comments I get from fellow Presidents about the way our club operates. It’s all very Flattering but at the end of the day it’s a about a great group of people behind the scenes that deserve all the accolades. Well done guys and gals. You know who you are!!!
Until next time, Go Crocs!
